Application for 2017-18 music lessons will open on May 1.

New Students

Are you interested in enrolling your child in Community Music School? Here is some information to help you understand our core program and selection criteria (information about additional programs is at the bottom of this page):

  • New students must apply during the annual enrollment period, which opens May 1 and closes June 15. The online application will be available at the bottom of this page during the enrollment period.
  • Space is limited, and we are unable to accept all applicants.
  • Applicants must be 6 years old by September 1st of the current school year.
  • We provide weekly lessons on an academic calendar, with a fall semester from September to December, and a spring semester from January to May.
  • A Fundamentals of Music group class is offered for students new to music, i.e. not currently enrolled in a band or orchestra nor skilled in reading music.
  • All applicants must be approved for or meet the income requirements of Wake County’s Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program. Applications will not be considered until eligibility letters or other documents verifying household income are received.
  • Families must have access to email in order to participate in our program.
  • New student families will be invited to the school for an in-person interview prior to final selection. This is to ensure that the family can commit to the level of support required for their child to succeed in the program. If we receive more applications than we have spaces available, we will invite families in for interviews using a lottery system.
  • We expect students to attend every lesson as scheduled and make time for at-home practice. Families must also participate in fundraising activities, community performances, and concerts.
  • New applicants who qualify for the program and can read music but do not receive a placement with CMS in the fall will be added to our waiting list. This list will be used to fill any mid-year vacancies for private music lessons. We do not have a waiting list for students who are new to music, as it is not possible to begin the Fundamentals of Music curriculum mid-year.
  • Information regarding the status of applications will be communicated via email by July 20.

Returning Students

  • All returning students interested in private music lessons with CMS in 2017-2018 must reapply during open enrollment from May 1 through June 15. The online application will be available at the bottom of this page during the enrollment period.
  • Applications will not be considered until the current year’s Free and Reduced Lunch form (or tax equivalent) is on file.
  • Please review the student handbook for important changes.
  • Records of all absences, music appreciation points, practice logs and progress reports will be reviewed for each student and will determine the student’s eligibility for re-enrollment.
  • Requests for lesson days and times will be considered, but not guaranteed. Lesson day and time from 2016-17 will not automatically remain the same. Families will be contacted with assigned lesson information.
  • Information regarding the status of applications will be communicated via email by July 20.
